Dialogue Interreligieux Monastique / Monastic Interreligious Dialogue
In response to a 1957 encyclical by Pope Pius XII, the Benedictine and Cistercian monastic orders began establishing monasteries in countries with not many Christians. In 1960 an Alliance for International Monasticism was established to support this expansion. Superiors of the new monasteries met in Africa in 1964 and again in 1968 in Thailand. Then, in October 1973 a historic interfaith gathering of monastics took place in Bangalore, India. The topic was The Experience of God. As a result of that meeting, Rome asked the Benedictine Order to become actively involved in interreligious dialogue, since "monasticism is the bridge between religions".
DIMMID envisions a world in which shared religious wisdom will lead to a deeper comprehension and fuller expression of all religious faiths and a greater unity of the human family.
Dialogue at the level of religious esperience / au niveau de l'experience religieuse.
To promote and support dialogue at the level of religious experience and practice, between Christian monastic men and women and followers of other religions.
The primary means to achieve MIDs goal as expressed in its mission and vision is interfaith dialogue.
DIMMID is a commission of the Benedictine Confederation with formal links to both branches of the Cistercian order. It acts in liaison with the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and welcomes collaboration with other organizations that foster interreligious dialogue. DIMMID is civilly incorporated in the state of Minnesota (USA) as a nonprofit, tax-exempt institution operating exclusively for charitable, educational, and religious purposes.
